New York City FC will open up the 2015 Carolina Challenge Cup against fellow expansion side Orlando City SC on Saturday, Feb. 21, Charleston Battery President Andrew Bell announced Tuesday.
The Battery, which hosts the annual pre-season tournament, made it official. The two expansion teams will take the headline spot on the first day of the tournament, playing at 7:30 pm.
"Traditionally, the Battery has played the late games during the Challenge Cup," Bell said. "But we considered the historical significance of the first NYCFC-Orlando City match, the traveling fans of both clubs, and the world-class stars involved. Giving that event prominence just seemed like the right move."
The teams will play double headers on three days -- Saturday, February 21; Wednesday, February 25; and Saturday, February 28. Tickets for the tournament, held at the Battery's Blackbaud Stadium, go on sale December 1 at 10:00 am.
