New York City selects Matt Dunn in dispersal draft

The midfielder was a surprising selection by the team.

In today's Dispersal Draft, New York City FC surprised more than a few folks by selecting 20-year-old midfielder Matthew Dunn with the second pick.

Dunn, a native of Dallas, Texas, spent two years in Germany with FC Cologne’s Youth Academy before signing with Serbian side OFK Beograd at the age of 18. The midfielder then moved on to enroll at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where he recorded seven goals and 10 assists in 17 starts for the Bengals during his freshman campaign.

This season, Dunn played seven games, earning four starts, for a total of 407 minutes played. He had one assist, and scored no goals. Dunn was a member of the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team, playing in all four matches in the 2011 U-17 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

For New York City, Dunn is most likely a medium-to-long term project. He doesn't pencil in as an immediate starter, but he certainly has potential.
