New York City FC have loaned goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald to his former club, Carolina RailHawks of the North American Soccer League.
New York City signed Fitzgerald last year upon the expiry of his contract in NASL. He made two preseason appearances for the Bronx Blues: as a second-half substitute in a 2-0 win against St. Mirren on February 10th, and as the starter in a 2-1 loss to Houston Dynamo at the Carolina Challenge Cup on February 24th.
Fitzgerald's future with the senior club grew murky as Red Bulls loanee Ryan Meara returned from injury, and further so when NYCFC signed 6'7" Norwegian netminder Eirik Johansen on March 31st. Today's loan announcement clearly comes with an eye toward playing time.
Fitzgerald will be eligible to re-join New York City on June 7th, one day after the RailHawks wrap their NASL spring season against Minnesota United FC.
