In a move that was widely expected, the club confirmed its two newest additions today, bolstering a back four that has battled inconsistency and a spate of injuries.

From the official press release:

New York City FC has signed defender Andoni Iraola from Athletic Bilbao.

"I have only played for one club throughout my whole career and I knew after leaving Bilbao my first choice was always to play in the U.S. and in New York," Iraola said. "It's a very exciting opportunity for me to join New York City FC in our inaugural season. This is a team with huge potential, passionate supporters, and I really wanted to be a part of it..

"New York seems like the most suitable place for me to continue my career, it's a great city and I'm already wishing I was there training with my teammates."

Let's get to know Andoni Iraola:

FULL NAME: Andoni Iraola Sagarna

BIRTHPLACE: Usurbil, Basque Country, Spain

MAIN / SECONDARY POSITIONS: Right fullback / right midfield

CLUB CAREER: 510 total appearances for Athletic Bilbao, who were three-time runners-up for the Spanish Copa del Rey over his twelve-year service. Appeared in the 2012 UEFA Europa League Final. Scored 38 total goals with Athletic.

INTERNATIONAL: 7 caps for Spain between 2008 and 2011.

HE SAID IT: "For me it will be very nice playing with David Villa. We've crossed paths on the national team, we have played against each other many times but being able to play with him in the league and fight together is extra motivation for me."

Iraola will arrive in July alongside Angelino, who comes on loan from Manchester City's Elite Development Squad. NYCFC announced the loan thus:

New York City FC is pleased to announce the acquisition of defender Jose Angel Tasende on load for the remainder of the 2015 Major League Soccer season.

"I'm very happy for the opportunity that Manchester City and New York City FC have given me. To be able to play in New York is a great opportunity for me and I am eager to get started."

Let's get to know Angelino:

FULL NAME: Jose Angel Esmoris Tasende

D.O.B.: 4 January 1997 (age 18)

MAIN / SECONDARY POSITIONS: Left fullback / left midfield

CLUB CAREER: Signed with Manchester City's youth academy in July 2013, joining the Under-18's. Made his Elite Development Squad (Under-21) debut before his 17th birthday. Scored a hat trick in a 4-2 win over Leicester City on April 7th.

INTERNATIONAL: Spain Under-17's

HE SAID IT: "I know Shay Facey is doing really well for the team and loving the experience. The atmosphere at Yankee Stadium seems amazing so I'm really looking forward to playing in front of our supporters."

Added Jason Kreis: "Angelino is a talented young player that I became very familiar with when I spent my five months in Manchester. Immediately, he was somebody that I liked. I was impressed by his character, the way he trained, and the effort he gave the team on the pitch."

Both new signings bring positional flexibility and dribbling, as well as a scoring touch. Iraola developed a strong reputation in Spain as a creator, while Angelino has emerged as a set-piece taker, having found the net from as far as 25 yards.

Without a doubt, Jason Kreis will have a number of new toys to play with come July.
