Even at age 18, New York’s very own Nasty Nas knew what the deal really was.
It was in 1991 that the man born Nasir Jones made his first appearance on a major record. The song was “Live at the Barbeque.” The album was Breaking Atoms. The artist was a funky little boom-bap outfit by the name of Main Source.
Interestingly enough, Main Source really must be our official soundtrack for today’s opening leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals: its classic lineup featured two MCs from Toronto — Sir Scratch and K-Cut — and a virtuoso DJ from New York, the inimitable Large Professor.
Poetry attacks, paragraphs punch hard
My brain is insane, I'm out to lunch, God
Science is dropped, my raps are toxic
My voice box locks and excels like a rocket
Take Nas’s infinite wisdom with you into tonight’s game, whether you’re watching at home, streaming on your preferred device, roughing it through the cold up in Ontario, or getting down with your fellow supporters at Ryan’s Daughter, Bar 43, the Mad Hatter, the Playwright, Banter, Carragher’s, the Football Factory, the Mad Donkey, Kent Ale House, or Bronx Brewery.
Just promise us one thing: don’t fake the funk.
