Three Things: Pre-Game

What can we expect from tonight's clash against the Lions?

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Here's three things to look for prior to tonight's game against Orlando City (7 p.m. EDT, Univision).

Will Vieira go with three defenders at the back again? The Blues' manager made some waves in his post-game press conference Sunday night by saying that he'd be willing to employ a three-man backline again - "maybe 3-4-3, maybe 3-3-4". While New York City's defense hasn't covered itself in glory, it's done a far better job than last season. A three-man backfield makes a certain kind of sense in the cramped confines of Yankee Stadium, where the Blues will face off against the Lions tonight. Don't be surprised if you see it.

Will either RJ Allen or Andoni Iraola make an appearance tonight? New York City's defense hasn't featured either of their first-choice right backs in their first two games. Third-string right back Ethan White got the start in the inaugural game against Chicago, whilst Frederic Brillant started at right back against Toronto. Either Allen or Iraola would be an improvement on those two — over White because of talent, and over Brillant because that's not the Frenchman's best position.

Will we see Kwadwo Poku in the 18 tonight? Don't be surprised if Poku's absent yet again. The Blues aren't moving on from him; technical director Claudio Reyna rates him quite highly, as does Vieira. What they want to see is improvement from Poku in terms of his technical ability and tactical nous. Once that comes, expect to see Poku regularly.
