I have a soft spot for Columbus. This isn't the "Cowtown" it gets mocked as.
You laugh, but it's true! Full disclosure: I grew up here. Home to THE Ohio State University, Columbus is actually THE biggest city in Ohio. It's home to probably THE most vibrant and diverse population in the state. Cincinnati tends towards conservatism, and in many ways orients itself towards the South and really, St. Louis. Cleveland, meanwhile, resembles other industrial towns like Detroit and Pittsburgh -- not as devastated as the former, not as revamped as the latter.
And then there's Columbus. Let's stipulate that the modern era of American soccer began with a miraculous goal in Trinidad & Tobago 27 years ago, which sent the U.S. men's national team to their first World Cup in forty years. If that's the case, then Columbus is at the heart of it. The Columbus Crew - now Columbus Crew SC - were literally the first Major League Soccer team. They were the first MLS team to build a soccer-specific stadium. A stadium, mind you, that's now the national stadium; there's a reason the USMNT goes there when it absolutely, no kidding, needs a win.
Columbus may not be the kind of place that signs a Zlatan or a Keane, but they nevertheless hold a massive place in MLS. Oh, one other thing: like us, they mock Chicago for calling whatever that weird thing it is they eat "pizza".
HOW TO WATCH
MATCH THREAD RULES
Oh, hai! We're glad you're here! Wipe your feet, mind the gap, and be sure to blindly subscribe to our YouTube Channel! While you're here, though, we have a few rules and regulations.
- Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They're bad and they get us in trouble. Raf will be relegated to covering the Cosmos with Mike Petke. Sam will be thrown in a burlap sack and beaten with reeds. But seriously, they're illegal. So don't do it.
- We have rules against "relentless negativity." Nobody likes a Negative Nancy or Doubtful Darlington, even if the team gets off to an awful start. Don't knee-jerk and post outlandish or hurtful things just because you're frustrated.
- Along those lines, outright abuse of players or match officials is verboten. It's fine to say "wow, that's a bad call, match official," but it's NOT okay to direct copious amounts of abuse in the direction of said official over a call you did not like.
- Treat other people in the match thread the way you would want someone else to treat your grandmother. Be nice. Observe Wheaton's Law. This is a community of fans, not an un-moderated message board.
Finally, while we don't have a rule against profanity, any language that is sexist, racist, or homophobic in nature will be swiftly deleted. Most importantly, though: HAVE FUN, tip your wait staff, and remember that even though we're playing against them tonight, at least they prefer real pizza.
