This morning, YES announced plans to televise New York City FC's second-ever U.S. Open Cup match. According to a network press release:
"The YES Network, the exclusive local television rights holder of New York City FC, will televise live the fourth-round match of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup between NYC FC and the New York Cosmos of the NASL on Wednesday, June 15 from Jack Coffey Field on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx. The match telecast will begin at 7:30 pm ET, with Joe Tolleson and Janusz Michallik calling the action."
After being forced to tolerate the New York Cosmos' home broadcast on OneWorldSports for last year's Open Cup match at Hofstra, this is a welcome development.
The June 15th showdown marks the only game NYCFC will play during Major League Soccer's current break for the Copa America Centenario. With so much time to rest, expect New York City to start a much stronger XI than the last time the two teams played: on that day in 2015, NYCFC did not have any designated players available, and Eirik Johansen made his first-ever professional start in goal.
Indeed, the narratives are many, and that's without even mentioning the outrageous tensions between these opposing fanbases. Despite this being ostensibly a "home game" for the Blues, we don't have much of a feel for how the Fordham thing is going to go. But rest assured that we'll be there, cameras rolling, ready to bring you the story live-and-direct. Where will you be?
