With New York City FC losing their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup against Columbus Crew SC Sunday night, the first off-season questions have started to arise: Which players will be staying in New York and which will be leaving?
The first domino to fall was Andrea Pirlo announcing his retirement last month. Today, the Daily Mail is reporting that Jack Harrison is a target of Brighton and Hove Albion, Everton, and Leicester City for the January transfer window. According to the same article, NYCFC reportedly value the 20-year-old at £6 million. While the Mail is not the most accurate source — so don’t read into this report super heavily — the interest in Harrison is not at all surprising, given his age and potential.
The timing of this move would also make sense. He has two years of regular playing time under his belt and now that he is on the England under-21 squad, he may be looking for an even greater challenge. From NYCFC’s perspective, they could certainly use the money from the sale to invest in new players and their academy.
