#SillySeason may have wrapped up overseas, but the silliness continues here in MLS. And our good friends at Empire of Soccer and NYCFC Nation are back at it again, picking up on a report out of Europe that New York City FC have their eyes set on 26-year-old Senegalese Midfielder, Stephane Badji, currently for Belgian side RSC Anderlecht. Despite the European Window closing on the 31st of January, NYCFC still has a chance to sign Badji once they have put in the bid due to the North America window remaining open through February.

The Senegalese international is said to be pushing for the move after being told he is “no longer of use” at his current club. Badji joined Anderlecht in 2016 and has made 24 appearances for the club. Primarily a central midfielder, Badji also has experience playing defensive midfielder and right back.

NYCFC will have to pay a transfer fee to obtain Badji’s services, as his current contract lasts until 2019 with RSC Anderlecht; per transfermarkt.com, his market value is currently estimated at €1.20 million. NYCFC Nation are reporting that the parties are pursuing a loan deal, so it remains to be seen if this possible signing will be a permanent one.

If so, Badji will be one of several new midfielders to join City this winter. In addition to Badji, the club has already signed Miguel Camargo on loan, and also signed Alexander Ring this week as well. Rookie Jonathan Lewis is officially in the fold, with unsigned draftees Kwame Awuah, Chris Wingate in the mix for a roster spot. Awuah may figure to play at left back in MLS, but all three draft picks have experience in the midfield. The club also has midfield veterans like John Stertzer and Michael Farfan in camp as trialists.

The club’s first preseason match will be on February 8th, when they face Ecuadorian side C.S. Emelec down in Ecuador. This will be fans’ first look at all of the new faces who will be competing to wear the City Blue this upcoming season. The match will be streamed on nycfc.com.
