On transfer deadline day in Europe, Manchester City secured the services of Atletico Venezuela’s Yangel Herrera. But while the 19 year old defensive midfielder’s future may be in the northwest of England, his present could be right here in the Five Boroughs.
¡ES OFICIAL! Yangel Herrera se va traspasado al Manchester City de Inglaterra. El volante da el salto a un grande de Europa. ¡Grande! pic.twitter.com/c8oHnbsqMi— Atlético VenezuelaCF (@AtleticoVzla) January 31, 2017
Spanish outlet AS has the talented youngster coming to NYCFC on loan, a possibility bandied about day up and down the dank alleys of the interwebs since deadline day. At this point, it’s unclear what the club would do to make available another international player spot, what with this week’s signing of Finland’s Alexander Ring. Suffice to say that the club has always managed to scrounge up one more when they’ve needed one.
With the ability to come up the middle or cover at center back, Herrera looks to be the kind of project that ought to have Patrick Vieira’s mouth watering. As the AS report notes, who better to shape the future of an assertive, ball-playing tough guy? With Fernando, Fernandinho, and (occasionally) Fabian Delph under contract at the Etihad Stadium in the deep midfield, it would follow that Herrera, a once-capped Venezuelan international, will be able to take all the time he needs getting ship-shape for the bright lights of the Premier League.
Again, questions remain about the finer terms of the deal, but if it goes through, our fair New York City FC would appear to be just one designated player signing away from a run at glory in 2017.
That’s right, glory. Say it out loud. It’s OK.
