With the Cosmos already out, an even more familiar foe looms this summer.

The draw for the fourth round of the US Open Cup took place today and New York City FC will face the New York Red Bulls in Harrison.

The date is yet to be set but the first Hudson River Derby of this year will most likely take place on June 14th. A quick rematch in league would come 10 days later on June 24th.

Patrick Vieira’s team did not have the best of results in their first two USOC tournaments. In 2015 they lost on penalty kicks to the New York Cosmos (3:4) and in 2016 in the dying moments of regular time (1:0). New York City will not be able to avenge those defeats this year, as the Cosmos lost last night 3-2 to Reading United AC, a team that plays in the Premier Development League.

With the Cosmos out of the competition, the USOC decided that matching up the MLS sides from New Jersey and New York was the way to go. While facing another top-tier side this early in the tournament isn’t exactly ideal, this year’s NYCFC squad is definitely deep enough to put together a competitive side that can defeat our cross river rivals. We will have to wait and see if Patrick Vieira takes this year’s competition seriously and fields a team with some true first-teamers.

The US Open Cup is a great way for New York City to win some silverware and this year’s campaign will start off with high expectations of coming out of New Jersey with a win.
