New York City FC announced today that fullback Shannon Gomez will head on loan to the United Soccer League’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
The 20 year old Gomez put forth a solid preseason display for NYCFC, but has not seen the field in a competitive game in 2017. His lone start for the Blues came last year in the U.S. Open Cup against the New York Cosmos.
An attacking-oriented, right-sided player, Gomez initially came to New York City on loan from Trinidadian club W-Connection before the 2016 season. Though he didn’t appear in MLS play and missed the second half of the campaign with a ruptured knee ligament, NYCFC opted to purchase Gomez from W-Connection the following offseason.
Many of us were hopeful that Gomez had a niche on the right side of Patrick Vieira’s back four, only to witness the humble emergence of Ethan White. And with RJ Allen’s recent resurgence at the position that he manned for most of the last two seasons, it became a chore to attempt to figure where Gomez’s playing time was going to come from.
Good luck in the Burgh, Shannon! We’ll be seeing you soon.
