New York City FC’s Yangel Herrera provided what would be the decisive spot kick as Venezuela bested Uruguay in a penalty shootout in Daejon, South Korea to earn a spot in the championship match of the U20 World Cup.
Uruguay held a 1-0 lead for nearly the entirety of the second half through Nicolas de la Cruz, but late substitute Samuel Sosa struck a masterful free kick one minute into stoppage time to keep the dream alive for la Vinotinto.
All three of Venezuela’s knockout-round matches have been tied after 90 minutes.
Both teams traded successful penalties to open the shootout, but Uruguay’s second was saved.
The next four attempts hit the net, but Venezuela would crack the crossbar to give up the chance to take a 4-3 advantage.
Immediately after, team captain Herrera stepped up to the spot and righted the wrong. He smacked home his big chance, and his opponents’ final attempt was saved to seal the historic win.
For NYCFC’s Herrera, currently on loan from Manchester City, only a Sunday date with England stands in the way of lifting the U20 World Cup.
Buena suerte, Daddy Yangkee!
