What do you get for a man who already has everything?
That’s not an easy question to answer if the man is David Villa, who’s climbed just about every mountain the Beautiful Game has to offer. But for now, Player of the Month honors in Major League Soccer will do.
June was a massive month for New York City FC’s captain, who surpassed the 50-goal mark as an MLS player while leading his team to a clean sweep in league play. Those four consecutive wins, including a historic first at Red Bull Arena, put NYCFC in third place in the Supporters Shield standings, and up to #2 in MLSSoccer.com’s most recent power rankings.
With eleven goals to his name in 2017, Villa sits third in the race for the Golden Boot, but it’s his half-dozen assists that fairly jump off the stat sheet. It’s bizarre to imagine that the Guaje, your reigning league MVP, could possibly add additional layers to his game at age 35, but guess what? It’s happening.
At this rate, nothing ought to surprise us anymore. Seriously: how shocked are we actually allowed to be if Villa leads New York City to the Cup?
I’d be more shocked if my bagel place got my order right.
