Facing a catastrophic injury bug and a slew of international absences, New York City FC has their eyes on some reinforcements.
Two reports out of Europe state that Slovenia international Andraz Struna, an unattached defender most recently of Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premier League, is likely to sign on to play in the Five Boroughs. (h/t NYCFC Reddit)
According to Transfermarkt, Struna is primarily a right back with the ability to cover on the left or in defensive midfield. His estimated market value is listed at $600,000.
The news arrives a week after WFAN’s Glenn Crooks confirmed that former Manchester United Academy defender Tom Thorpe was on trial with the club ahead of Friday’s draw with the Red Bulls.
The rumblings couldn’t have arrived at a better time, as September 6th’s upcoming clash with Sporting Kansas City will feature a New York City side absolutely decimated by injuries (Maxime Chanot, Ronald Matarrita, Ethan White, Mikey Lopez) and international call-ups (David Villa, Rodney Wallace, Alexander Ring, Yangel Herrera).
Are there eighteen players available to select? Like, any eighteen? That remains to be seen. But if it takes !!!JAMES SANDS!!! and a trialist or two in order to get to that magic number, so be it.
It’s not like Sporting KC scores goals anyway.
