Start marking your calendars and asking your boss for those days off, because the 2018 MLS regular season schedule has been released.
Fans of New York City FC will be relieved that they don’t have to close out the season against Columbus Crew SC for the third year in a row. Apart from that, however, there is little significant variation.
The three Hudson River Derby matches against the New York Red Bulls are sure to light up the Twitter feed. They include an away fixture at Red Bull Arena on May 5, and two at Yankee Stadium on July 8 and August 22. NYCFC got the better of the Red Bulls in 2017; despite being defeated 1-0 in a U.S. Open Cup match, City won the regular season series against the Toros, winning two games and drawing the other. The Bronx Blues will look to further their recent success over their New Jersey rivals in 2018.
Other notable matches include the May 13 matchup at Los Angeles FC, the first time the two teams will meet in their histories, as well as the matchup against the defending Supporters’ Shield holders and MLS Cup champions Toronto FC at home on June 24.
It should also be noted that the last home game of the season takes place on MLS Decision Day on October 28. This is the part of the season where the MLB postseason and MLS season begin to really clash in their scheduling. Depending on the New York Yankees’ efficiency in the playoffs (should they make it), this game against the Philadelphia Union may or may not be relocated to another venue. So, prepare for the unexpected.
As of right now, no preseason matchups have been announced.
