The argument could be made that Yangel Herrera’s injury was the turning point that sent New York City FC’s form into a downward spiral. Since falling to circumstance, the Blues have struggled to adequately replace him. Eloi Amagat? LOL! Ebenezer Ofori? Inconsistent. And while James Sands looks to be a good prospect, it’s unfair for anyone to expect the world from an 18-year-old who has yet to find true footing in his professional career.
Whether or not his performance was always at the highest clip, Herrera’s unique skill set and aggression provided a great help to both attacking midfielder Maxi Moralez and No. 6 Alex Ring.
NYCFC have released a pretty awesomely made video detailing Herrera’s injury and his long journey back to the Bronx.
Judging by recent posts, Herrera has returned to full training or is at least really, really close to it. Should he be fit for NYCFC’s last two games against D.C. United and the Philadelphia Union — as well as the MLS Cup Playoffs — the Boys in Blue could finally see themselves return to the form that they have fallen from this past summer.
That is, unless Domé Torrent sees things differently. Fingers crossed.
