A few weeks after first broke the news, VfB Stuttgart midfielder Ebenezer Ofori has officially joined New York City FC on a one-year loan, the club announced Wednesday. The deal includes an option for NYCFC to buy the Ghanaian midfielder following the 2018 season.

NYCFC previously pursued Ofori prior to the 2017 season while he was with Swedish club AIK Solna, before he ultimately decided to try his luck in Germany’s Bundesliga.

However, the 22-year-old struggled for playing time once joining Stuttgart. To date, he only has nine appearances with the first team and has been largely unused.

Ebenezer sounded excited talking with, “I’m feeling good and happy because I’ve been looking forward to starting this new chapter with a big club like NYCFC. For me, I just want to be part of a successful team this year, to be happy and to play in and win many games as I can with my new team. I can’t wait to step out in the Bronx on a gameday and to meet the fans for the first time.”

Both head coach Patrick Vieira and Sporting Director Claudio Reyna lauded Ofori’s competitiveness and noted that adding him to an already deep group of midfielders will bring out the best in everyone.

”He’s a competitor, he’s a guy who likes to win, he’s a strong character,” Vieira said to “He’s coming to this club to compete with the midfielders we have and, like I always say, that will bring the best out of all of the players we have at this football club.”
