David Villa and James Sands make MLS Team of the Week

Villa returns to prominence while the Sandman makes a stellar first impression

MLS: D.C. United at New York City FC Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a rough week for New York City FC. Coming off of two straight losses within one week — including their first at home — NYCFC seemed destined to continue down the path of sorrow against D.C. United this past Saturday after trailing the Black-and-Reds 1-0 late in the game.

The Boys in Blue, however, were able to salvage a point at home due to some heroics from none other than David Villa, who hit an absolute banger of a free kick in the 86th minute.

Villa’s late game heroics seem to have made an impression upon the powers that be at Major League Soccer and landed him a spot on the MLS Team of the Week, as well as the week’s leader in Audi Player Index points, whatever that means. Additionally, HGP James Sands also made the TotW after making his first two starts in his MLS career.

Villa and Sands’ inclusions are a testament that despite NYCFC the team struggling to get key results right now, the club’s older and younger generations of players are both stepping up and producing what they can.

Congrats to both Villa and Sands for this achievement.
