Unlike other past years, there are only two scheduled installments of the Hudson River Derby against the New York Red Bulls this season: July 14 at Red Bull Arena and August 24 at Yankee Stadium. The fact that there are only two scheduled derbies this season is definitely different, but it certainly makes these matches even more crucial.
Elsewhere, NYCFC will meet 2019 expansion side FC Cincinnati for the first time in their history on June 6 at home and on July 17 on the road at Nippert Stadium. Other notable fixtures include two matches against the defending MLS Cup champions Atlanta United on August 11 and September 25 in Atlanta and New York respectively. These two clubs have fought tooth and nail in their young history and could be a new rivalry moving forward.
Disappointingly, however, the Blues will close their regular season against the Philadelphia Union on October 6 at Talon Energy Stadium, making this the second straight time the two have faced each other in the season-ending game.
The best part about this year’s schedule in that there is no super-long break in between any of the games. At many points in their 2018 campaign, NYCFC had two-week breaks (sometimes even three-week breaks) in between spurts of two or three games within days of each other. The Blues will play four games in March; three in April, May, and June; five in July; a whopping 7 in August; 6 in September; and one game in the beginning of October.
That’s a lot of football.
