New York City FC’s newest Designated Player Alexandru Mitrita was a substitute for Romania in today’s UEFA European qualifier against the Faroe Islands. After coming onto the pitch in the 69th minute for Florinel Coman — coincidentally, a player that NYCFC has been linked to recently — Mitri would make his presence known when in the 83rd minute, he would put himself on the scoresheet.
After receiving a ball at the top of the area, Mitrita would tap the ball over to Claudiu Keseru who then placed the ball into space for Mitrita on a nifty one-two. While evading what seemed like the entire Faroe defense, Mitrita carried the ball into space before brilliantly finishing far-post to secure a tidy 3-0 win for Romania.
The goal can be found here.
The 3-0 Romania win puts them second in Group F — behind Spain, who are currently running away with it — with three more games to play. Sweden currently sits in third, two points down and with a game in hand. The top two teams of each group qualify for the 2020 UEFA Euro.
For Mitrita, this is his first goal for Romania’s senior team since making his first cap last year.
