WATCH: NYCFC publish a pretty awesome video about their “Pigeons” nickname

Well, when you break it down like that...

I’ll be the first to admit that when the “Pigeon” nickname first started popping up in regard to New York City FC, I was pretty against it. I mean, pigeons are pretty much rats with wings as far as I’m concerned, especially New York pigeons. They’re dirty, they’re annoying, they don’t move for anyone... they’re just a constant nuisance.

But as the club has grown, I’ve admittedly become more receiving of the nickname. And so has the team. On this year’s home kit, a mosaic pigeon is the jock tag. And you know what? I love it!

Earlier today, NYCFC published a video on their YouTube channel detailing the nickname in the form of an interview with the “NYC Pigeon” himself, Omari McCleary. And trust me, it’s worth the watch!

Omari’s reasoning behind choosing the pigeon mascot to represent NYCFC is quite brilliant. On the nickname, the NYC native said: “On its own, it isn’t super amazing. It’s strong and beautiful when it’s many of them...”

Right on, my guy!
