Next year’s Silly Season is sure off to a good start.

In a report from La Voce di New York — an American-based Italian publication — current Napoli striker Dries Mertens could move to New York City FC in 2020 during the summer transfer window.

This report comes a few weeks after a cryptic Instagram post in which Mertens suggests that this next season with Napoli could be his last with the Blues.

I can’t speak Italian. But according to the trusty old Google Translate, Mertens says this:

“...we arrived together in Naples and now begins our 7th blue jersey championship, perhaps the last ... but how much fun we had frateee.“

According to La Voce di New York, Mertens has also received an offer from Inter Miami, a new franchise — the brainchild of English legend David Beckham — set to begin play in 2020. Though the article’s translation isn’t 100%, it seems that Mertens’ wife was the deciding factor in this choice — she would rather live in the Five Boroughs than the Magic City.

Now, the question looms — is this legit?

Your guess is as good as mine. But the thought of Mertens — a mainstay in the Belgium national team and the third highest goal scorer in Napoli history, behind only Marek Hamsik and Diego Maradona — playing for NYCFC next year is a nice one.

I hesitate to say that where there’s smoke, there’s fire (after all, look at what became of the stadium rumors earlier this year). Still, I’m a huge Mertens fan and would love to see him in a different shade of blue next summer.
