Tony Rocha is (also) called to international duty

Rocha becomes the sixth international call-up NYCFC must deal with

MLS: New York City FC at Vancouver Whitecaps FC Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

The thought of New York City FC having to enter a key point in their season missing five players due to international duty is bad enough. But six? That’s cutting it awfully close to the edge.

Earlier today, the club announced that midfielder Tony Rocha — who’s really begun coming into his own as a player — has been called up for the very first time to the Belize national team. Rocha is now the sixth NYCFC player to earn a call-up in the past week.

While I’m happy for Rocha (and everyone else who received a call-up) to get a chance on the international circuit, it’s extremely frustrating that NYCFC will have to play at least two games — September 7 against the New England Revolution and September 11 against Toronto FC — with at least five key players missing due to international duty.

Combine that with the four players that were missing on City’s last injury report, and that is a total of 10 players out of the 26 with the team that will be unavailable for the next two games. That is only 16 players available, which is not enough to even fill up a team sheet on a gameday.

I hope Domé has some nifty tricks up his sleeve.
