Mitrita nets his first MLS hat-trick as NYCFC dominate the Five Stripes in their final regular season home game!

MLS: Atlanta United FC at New York City FC Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

FT: NYCFC defeat Atlanta 4-1 in a rout in the Bronx!

Though the second half was nothing too special, Alexandru Mitrita’s hat-trick in the first half was the spark City needed to lift past their Eastern Conference foes. Now, we await the result in San Jose to see if NYCFC have clinched the East.

87’: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLL!!!! Héber makes his triumphant return and ends the game in style!

The Brazilian forward powered himself onto the ball, patiently waited for Guzan to make the first move, then swam around the former USM

72’: Boring half so far. City don’t the same fire they did in the first half. And it’s frustrating.

62’ Héber comes on for Alexandru Mitrita. What a game from the Romanian!

52’: Not a good start. Chanot concedes a penalty.

Pity Martinez steps up and scores it. 3-1, NYCFC still lead.

The second half is underway! FINISH THEM!!!

HT: NYCFC lead Atlanta 3-0 after a thorough first-half beatdown!

It’s been all Blues in the first 45 minutes as they have shocked onlookers and taken a dominant 3-0 lead, all thanks to Alexandru Mitrita’s hat trick. That could very well had been the best half of NYCFC football we’ve seen in a long time... maybe ever.

42’: PENALTY!!!! Maxi is barreled over in the box and earns a kick from the spot!

Maxi will step up to take it and.... misses it. Damn.

34’: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!! Mitrita grabs his hat trick in just the first half!

NYCFC continue to dominate the Five Stripes, and the Romanian is the one that is continuously causing them pain. Ismael Tajouri-Shradi steals the ball off an Atlanta defender’s foot, surges into the box and puts a shot on net. Guzan saves it, but Mitrita is right there to put it away. What a half!

32’: This is as crisp I’ve ever seen NYCFC! They are moving the ball effortlessly. They are defending valiantly. Everyone seems to be on the same page. This performance as of right now is complete in every conceivable way.

23’: GOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLL!!!! Mitri does it again!

Mitrita once again cuts onto his dominant right foot at the top. Unlike last time, however, he near-posts Guzan and grabs his second goal of the game in just the first half. Oh, it’s so beautiful!

14’: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Alexandru Mitrita strikes first!

The Romanian touched the ball past Gonzalez-Pires then delicately centered himself before firing one past a helpless Guzan. What a start to this one! 1-0 NYCFC.

8’: Allen Chapman apparently forgot his whistle. Those were two pretty clean cut fouls that he just miss

4’: Good stop by Chanot. Good follow-up stop by SeanJohn.

We’re off on this beautiful Bronx night! Can NYCFC clinch the East tonight?

Rosters are out! Due to injury, both Anton Tinnerholm and Keaton Parks — as previously reported — will be unavailable for selection tonight. In their place come Sebastien Ibeagha and Tony Rocha, respectively.

Rocha’s inclusion doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Ibeagha’s, however, absolutely does, at least as a right back. We’ll see if Domé knows something we don’t/

All-time series: Given everything at stake, New York City FC’s midweek contest against Atlanta United could very well be the Blues’ most important game of the regular season.

The stakes are simple — should they be able to top the Five Stripes in their last home game of the season and the Philadelphia Union get anything less than three points on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes, NYCFC will clinch first place in the Eastern Conference and guarantee themselves home-field advantage (and a first-round bye) for the entirety of the conference section of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Going into this one, NYCFC have gone unbeaten in their last 8 games and are among, if not the hottest team in all of MLS. Unfortunately, they may have to do this one without some key players as Anton Tinnerholm is out with a concussion and midfielder Keaton Parks is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury. Star striker Héber, however, has been cleared for action and has said to be available for tonight’s game for at least 30 minutes.

Atlanta will also be without their own star forward Josef Martinez, and could potentially be missing DP Ezequiel Barco as well.

This post will update with highlights and information as we receive it.
