It’s been over a month since New York City FC’s star playmaker Maxi Moralez has seen the field. Since the attacking midfielder sustained a calf injury against FC Cincinnati on September 12, NYCFC has been forced to be creative in replacing the Argentinian at the No. 10 spot.
At first, we saw Alexander Ring step into that role with varying levels of success. City would eventually find a suitable replacement in DP winger Alexandru Mitrita, who scored four goals in two games from the position. Unfortunately, personal matters regarding his wife’s pregnancy have forced Mitri abroad where he will likely stay until the end of his contract.
And in a time where they need him the most, NYCFC will be regaining the services of Moralez in time for their Sunday road game against the Columbus Crew.
Manager Ronny Deila confirmed in his Saturday press conference that Moralez has returned to full team training and is ready to get minutes in MLS games. When asked about whether or not Maxi is ready to start or will have to come on as a second half substitute, Deila could not say. “We’ll see,” Deila told the press. “We haven’t decided yet. We have to talk with him... and we’ll see what we’re doing. But he looks very good in training.”
