FT: NYCFC breezes past Montreal 3-1 in a brilliant second half performance .

Despite having a makeshift lineup, New York City were able to shake off an abysmal first half of play to rally in the second half and score three goals via Jesus Medina, Maxi Moralez, and Tony Rocha. City’s stitched-together defense was also impressive with their only blemish coming in garbage time on a momentary lapse of focus.

Big win!

89’: Quioto grabs a consolation goal for Montreal. NYCFC still lead 3-1.

The City midfielder was unmarked on the corner and easily puts it in the goal! 3-0 NYCFC, it’s all over!

83’: GOOOOOOOAAALLLLL!!! NYCFC doubles their lead in the dying stages!

Maxi sends Tinnerholm down the right side. The Swede immediately returns the ball to Moralez who buries it far post! New York City lead 2-0 and could’ve possibly just sealed this one.

79’: Montreal get a golden chance as City’s defense breaks down. But SeanJohn comes to the rescue.

78’: Tony Rocha comes on for Gary Mackay-Steven

68’ GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! City finally break through!

NYCFC launch a counterattack which began with a brilliant win from Alex Ring. Maxi ends up with the ball, slips Matarrita through, and the Costa Rican centers the ball past Montreal’s wayward keeper. After a botched clearance, Jesus Medina turns on his right foot and nestles the ball into the net to give NYCFC a 1-0 advantage.

64’: Montreal wastes a brilliant counterattack. NYCFC will be thanking their lucky stars after that one.

61’: Johnson denies Quioto on a tough near post shot.

55’: Different half. Same story. NYCFC can’t find their touch in the opposition’s wheelhouse.

The second half is underway. Can NYCFC get a much-needed goal and pull ahead?

HT: An uneventful first half of football sees NYCFC and Montreal in a scoreless deadlock.

As mentioned previously, New York City have controlled most of the game and are playing with some pep in their step. But with each trek into the attacking third, the wheels have completely fallen off for the Boys in Blue. I’m sure Deia will have some words for his team in the locker room.

35’: City has tons of energy, but nothing to show for it. NYCFC are good in the buildup, but falter in the final third.

28’: Medina pokes at it. But the Impact’s keeper is having himself a game.

18’: Gary Mackay-Steven attempts to grab his first goal of 2020. But once again, it’s saved.

5’: Great shot from Maxi! The diminutive Argentine lines up his shot and fires it far post. Montreal’s keeper is equal to it.

We’re off in the Bronx! Can a makeshift City side get the job done against Montreal?

Rosters are out! Jesus Medina starts for the suspended Taty Castellanos at striker while Ronald Matarrita moves into the attack and will play on the left wing. Ismael Tajouri-Shradi is missing from the team sheet, which immediately be interpreted as him being the NYCFC player that tested positive for COVID-19.

Despite NYCFC announcing a positive COVID-19 test, the game will proceed as planned.

The story: Coming off of a bitter 3-1 defeat against Columbus, New York City FC travel back to the Bronx in attempt to find their footing against the Thierry Henry-led Montreal Impact.

At 9th place in the Eastern Conference, Montreal has been struggling to stay above an even more lenient playoff line than usual. But nobody — especially at this stage of the season — can be slept on.

New York City have been a solid midtable side all season, but will be missing several key ingredients tonight. Both Taty Castellanos and Maxime Chanot will miss out on the proceedings due to yellow card accumulation, leaving the team without a striker and their veteran center back.

Ronny Deila will be forced to get super creative if he and the Boys wish to pick up a key result tonight and keep pace with the Eastern Conference leaders.

This post will update with highlights and information as we receive it.
