In case you didn’t already know, New York City FC’s newest acquisition Gudmundur Thórarinsson recently reported to his first training session with the club. As per usual, NYCFC’s social media team documented the event and put a video of the session up on YouTube. But before long, my attention was not on the recently acquired Thórarinsson, but a more familiar face instead.
Maxime Chanot — NYCFC’s veteran star center back — is wearing a protective face mask during training. You can see as such at the 1:04 time stamp in the video below:
This particular kind of face mask is usually reserved for players who have recently sustained a serious facial injury — in most cases, a broken nose. Seeing as he hasn’t made an international appearance since November, it can only be assumed that Chanot sustained such a facial injury in either a previous training session or in one of New York City’s recent friendly matches (most of them have been behind closed doors for some odd reason).
We hope that whatever ailment he might have mends itself in a timely fashion if it hasn’t already, especially with the CONCACAF Champions League just three days away. Chanot seems to be a full participant in training, so it’s likely I’m over-thinking. But it’s worth pointing out nonetheless.
