It is a rumor no more! New York City FC announced yesterday that they have purchased midfielder Nicolás Acevedo from Uruguayan club Liverpool Montevideo. The news comes a little over a week after Sport890 originally linked the young midfielder to the Boys in Blue.
The permanent transfer deal was made using Allocation Money and Acevedo will join NYCFC pending his acquisition of a P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
Acevedo, 20, is a highly touted prospect, having featured heavily for Uruguay’s U-20 national team — including eye-catching appearances in last year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup — and has long been linked to high-profile clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal, and soon-to-be 2019-20 Premier League champs Liverpool.
Primarily a defensive midfielder, the young Uruguayan joins a stacked midfielder corp consisting of players such as Alexander Ring, Keaton Parks, Justin Haak, James Sands, Gedion Zelalem, and Juan Pablo Torres. Where he fits into the equation remains to be seen. But nonetheless, every bit of depth helps. Especially when it comes in the form of a player that may very well be elite as he develops his game.
