Last night, the Portland Timbers and MLS sophomores FC Cincinnati battled a tight game that was so close, regulation time couldn’t decide it. After scoring one goal apiece, Portland and Cincinnati went to penalties to decide their Round of 16 matchup where the Timbers reigned supreme 5-3.
While NYCFC and Portland have not had the past tussles to indicate any kind of crazy rivalry that a team like Toronto presents, City are certainly no stranger to Timbers manager Giovanni Savarese.
Once a manager of the late NASL’s New York Cosmos, Savarese has been a thorn in New York City’s side. In both 2015 and 2016, the Cosmos — under Savarese’s leadership — sent City packing in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. And back in 2018, Savarese’s Timbers ended a tremendous run of form for the Blues. After starting off their season with a seven-game unbeaten streak, New York City suffered a dominating 3-0 loss at Providence Park that derailed their momentum almost completely.
Do not take the Timbers for granted. They have all the talent they need and a manager that loves shitting on teams from New York that wear blue.
