The save New York City FC captain Sean Johnson made against FC Cincinnati on April 24 was nominated for Save of the Year presented by Allstate.
It’s one of 16 saves put forward by the decision-makers at MLS headquarters on Fifth Avenue. Not only can you see the full lineup here, you can also cast your ballot: Unlike the Landon Donovan MVP award, which is decided in secret at Bohemian Grove by a conclave of team owners, managers, and Alexi Lalas, the Save of the Year is chosen by popular vote.
Johnson’s save is #4 on the list. It’s a lightening-quick double-stop he made on the goal line, all instinct, reflexes, and positioning. You can watch the broadcast replay here, but this raw fan footage from the Yankee Stadium stands is more visceral:
Johnson joined NYCFC in 2017. He was outstanding this season: NYCFC allowed only 36 goals this year, one of the lowest totals in MLS.
Save of the Year voting closes on November 19 at 11:59 pm. Tell a friend.
