FT: NYCFC lose their 2021 season opener 2-1 to DC.

What began as a promising evening turned into a nightmare. Despite being the first on the board, NYCFC lost momentum midway through the first half as D.C. began mounting pressure. Eventually, that pressure paid off with two goals in the latter stages of the first half.

The second half saw City occasionally threaten to equalize, but D.C. wouldn’t break at the back. A disappointing start to the season to say the least.

84’: Taty almost leveled it there. Corner kick instead.

And again, a save from DC.

Double substitution. Malte Amundsen comes on for Gudi. Alfredo Morales comes on for Alexander Callens. This is a NYCFC debut for both.

68’: Medina takes a pop that skims off the crossbar. Looked like an equalizer at first glance. But no dice.

57’: NYCFC looks sloppy. I have no other words to describe it. They literally look like they have no clue as to what they are doing.

48’: Another corner for DC after a long attempt. City can’t mount any pressure, whereas DCU is just pulling it out of a cap.

We’re back for the second half. NYCFC need to find a way back in this game if they want a point, much less three.

HT: NYCFC trail DCU 2-1 after a sloppy first half.

It started off great. City pressed well early, were winning balls, and creating chances. It culminated with NYCFC scoring in the first 15 minutes to give the Boys an early lead. But since then, it’s been nothing but ugly.

City concede two late goals in the first half, both in sloppy and avoidable fashion, And right now, their backs look to be on the ropes. It’s gonna be a tough task to figure it out going forward.

44’: DC score again. The wheels have fallen off.

Not long after conceding the equalizer, City concede an avoidable corner. This is going nowhere fast. DCU leads 2-1.

39’: Goal. DCU scores a banger.

It felt like it was coming. and sure enough, it did. City needs to wake up and get back to their form from the first 15 minutes.

32’: Sean Johnson called into action for the first time, and he’s equal to the long-distance shot.

Just under the 30-minute mark. It’s mostly NYCFC. After scoring the opening goal, City have let D.C. into the game a bit. Overall, though, the Boys look good.

15’: GOOOOOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! NYCFC score their first goal of 2021!

City spur the counter-attack. Tinnerholm takes his space on the right wing, plays the ball across the face of goal, and Taty Castellanos taps it home! 1-0, NYCFC lead early!

14’: Tajouri-Shradi hits the crossbar on a free kick! Sooooo close!

9’: That was an ugly challenge from Brillant. Hopefully, Maci can continue.

2’: Taty almost starts 2021 with a banger! The Argentinian laces a shot from distance that drifts just wide.

It’s been a long offseason. But we’re back with another MLS season!

NYCFC in the class City Blue’s to begin the year. Let’s hope for some quality!

Season opener rosters are out! Jesus Medina and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi starts on the wings, with Andres Jasson starts on the bench. It seemed like the young Jasson would get the nod. But other people have apparently stepped up in training.

Gudi gets the start over Malte Amundsen at left back due to the latter’s late arrival. This will also mark the first time Sean Johnson gets the arm band.

Let’s go!

The story: After an interesting offseason, New York City FC plays their 2021 MLS season opener against D.C. United tonight. For NYCFC, fans aren’t sure what to make of their prospects this season. But that kind of intrigue should breed enough curiosity to have supporters see it all through. As of right now, New York City is probably one of MLS’s biggest wildcards.

DCU, on the other hand, is still a club very much in transition. Having gone through a coaching change and some roster turnover, nobody expects much from the Black-and-Reds in 2021.

This makes this the perfect game for City to find their footing and get off on the front foot, something they didn’t do in 2020.

This post will update with highlights and information as we receive it.
