FT: NYCFC 5, Cincinnati 0

City returns home in style with big win over Cinci

MLS: FC Cincinnati at New York City FC Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

83’: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLL!!!! Jesus Medina grabs a brace!

The blowout continues. And what a way to keep it coming. Medina curls one from a long way out and grabs his second goal of the day. It’s 5-0, Boys in Blue. Are you not entertained!?

70’: Game not exciting enough? How about a double save from Johnson?

67’: GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLL!!! THEY KEEP COMING!

Maxi loops the corner over the congestion in the middle. Taty Castellanos is unmarked at the back post and laces the ball towards the middle. The ball ricochets off a Cinci defender and goes into the goal. City now lead 4-0!

57’: GOOOOOOAAALLLL!!! The Boys in Blue cannot be stopped!

Gudi Thorarinsson steps up to take the free kick and exquisitely bends it in near-post. NYCFC now lead 3-0!

53’: GOOOOOALLLLLL!!! City double their lead!

Maxime Chanot rises above his marker and the keeper, and heads it in. NYCFC now lead 2-0. This is just what the doctor ordered.

49’: Medina almost bags a brace! Nifty movement before that attempt.

We’re back for the second half. NYCFC have their lead, but it’s a narrow one. Odds are they want to add onto it.

HT: NYCFC lead Cincinnati 1-0 after one half.

It was a quality showing for City overall. Not perfect by any means, but NYCFC have dominated and were able to secure an early lead. 45 more minutes to go.

38’: Sean Johnson makes a heads up stop on a big deflection

28’: NYCFC looks strong, but it could be better. There isn’t as much space between the lines as they was in the DC game. They’re controlling the play and smothering the ball. Just need a few more shots. Still, a lead is a lead.

17’: NYCFC bailed out by emergency defending from Callens. Keaton Parks turns it over in the box, but the Peruvian rushes to the rescue.

7’: GOOOOOOOOOAAALLLL! City take an early lead!

A well delivered free kick falls to feet of Andres Jasson. His initial shot is deflected in front of net, but falls delicately for Jesus Medina who just taps it home. 1-0 NYCFC!

5’: Gudi looks slow at left back. He’s technically not bad. But he’s been burned twice.

We’re off in the Bronx! Good to have fans back in the house. Let’s see if City can reward them with a win.

Rosters are out! Surprisingly, Gudi Thorarinsson gets the nod over Malte Amundsen. But new HGP Andres Jasson gets the start at left wing over Ismael Tajouri-Shradi. Let’s hope it’s enough.

The story: New York City FC’s opening game of 2021 did not go as planned. In a road trip to the Nation’s Capital to face D.C. United, City got off to a fast start and pushed themselves ahead in the first 15 minutes. After that, however, the Boys in Blue completely fell off the pace and conceded two. Unable to muster enough momentum to match DCU’s intensity, NYCFC dropped their season opener to the tune of 2-1.

But things are different this time. NYCFC are returning to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, where the Blues will host fans at their primary home for the first time in 577 days. This time, against FC Cincinnati.

The main storyline of this one will surely be how former City player Ronald Matarrita fares against his old team.

This post will update with highlights and information as we receive it.
