New York City FC’s 5-0 win over FC Cincinnati on Saturday is sure to give supporters a boost in optimism. It’s exactly what the doctor ordered as far as reinvigorating the club and helping people forget the disaster that was the season opener against D.C. United the week prior.

Three NYCFC players have been singled out by Major League Soccer for having exceptional performances and deserving recognition. They are winger Jesus Medina, left back Gudi Thorarinsson, and goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Medina — coming off of possibly his most complete season in an NYCFC kit — scored a brace, including a stunner from a super wide position late in the game to cap it off. Despite several questions surrounding his viability in the lead-up, Gudi asserted himself as a set piece specialist on Saturday, playing a key part in City’s first goal and scoring one of his own on a free kick.

Sean Johnson had limited activity, but came up big whenever called upon. His double save in the second half preserved the clean sheet for NYCFC and ensured a heavy victory.

NYCFC will look to emulate their previous performance against a tough Philadelphia Union this coming weekend.
