Santiago Rodriguez alludes to NYCFC move in Instagram story

The Uruguayan attacking midfielder teases City fans in a recent social median update

Just a day after reports of the club being close to obtaining the services of Brazilian winger Talles Magno, New York City FC has been connected to a move for Uruguayan attacking midfielder Santiago Rodriguez. Rodriguez was previously rumored to be in talks with NYCFC back in December and last night, he posted a story on his Instagram with New York City’s badge in a cake alongside a picture of him imposed over the face of a cast member from USA Network show Suits.

I follow Rodriguez on Instagram and can confirm that this was indeed one of his IG stories.

Rodriguez, 21, has played with reigning Uruguayan champions Nacional since his professional debut in 2019. In November, he was sold to CFG-owned club Montevideo City Torque but was loaned out to Nacional to complete their championship winning season.

In 41 appearances with Nacional, Rodriguez scored 11 goals and was a key player in their Primera Division championship campaigns of both 2019 and 2020.

Rodriguez is a right-footed attacking midfielder capable of playing on either wing. Though his 5’6 frame isn’t going to be winning headers any time soon, Rodriguez possesses good ability on the ball in addition to be adept at both passing and shooting.

Should Santiago not be turning our wheels, his addition to the squad — along with Thiago Andrade and the “imminent” arrival of Talles Magno — should bolster City’s attack and turn them into a bona fide contender come the summer.
