Almost a month after he alluded to it on Instagram, Santiago Rodriguez has officially been announced as New York City FC’s newest signing. The 21-year-old Uruguayan attacking midfielder joins NYCFC on loan from sister club Montevideo City Torque until the end of the 2022 MLS season. Rodriguez will occupy one of the club’s international roster spots and will be eligible to play upon the approval of a P-1 visa.

To date, Santiago has not yet featured for Montevideo. After being bought from Nacional in 2020, Rodriguez was immediately loaned back to the Tricolors for the remainder of the season. Between Nacional and Montevideo City Torque, Rodriguez has appeared in 61 games while scoring 13 goals and 16 assists.

Rodriguez has been a fixture in Uruguay’s youth international setup since 2014. A right-footed player, Santi can play on either wing in addition to his primary position of attacking midfielder. He is also the latest in a slew of NYCFC signings since April which include the likes of Alfredo Morales, Thiago Andrade, and new Young Designated Player Talles Magno.
