Initially announced in 2019, New York City FC parted ways with Homegrown signing Joe Scally in a transfer to Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of the 2020 season in a deal worth a fee of around $2 million, with incentives that could grow to $7 million. Since then, Scally has mostly featured for Gladbach’s reserve side, making 12 appearances to date.

Earlier today, the 18-year-old right back featured extensively for Gladbach in a friendly against 3. Liga team Viktoria Koln. Here’s a look at some highlights.

According to one onlooker, Scally impressed, being “skillful on the ball, decent passer/crosser, reads the game fairly well, [and] good enough speed to hang...” While Scally did well to involve himself in the attack throughout his stint, one source of criticism was his defensive ability.

Should Scally be able to crack into a pretty talented Monchengladbach side, one would only think that he’d be in line to feature for the USMNT at some point in the not-so-distant future. At the very least, NYCFC are hoping that Long Island native can make some appearances to get the full value out of his transfer.

Good work, Joe! You’re very missed in the Five Boroughs!
