James Sands has been a revelation for the USMNT since the Gold Cup began. NYCFC’s first-ever Homegrown signing has played in all of the US’s five games thus far in the Gold Cup and has started in three straight as the middle center back in a back three.
Tonight, Sands gets his fourth straight start for the Stars & Stripes as they take on invitees Qatar in the Gold Cup Semifinal as they attempt to punch their ticket to an appearance in the final against either Mexico or Canada who face off later tonight.

Here’s your #USMNT Starting XI for tonight’s #GoldCup21 Semifinal vs. . #QATvUSA Lineup Notes: https://t.co/VFtvXrlycK pic.twitter.com/l8ETXCJ08Z
In his three starts with the USMNT, Sands and company have only given up one goals. Sands himself has been touted by many as being the breakout star for the US’s international setup and has gotten several shouts to perhaps take part in World Cup qualifying where the Yanks will undoubtedly have their best available players at their disposal unlike the Gold Cup roster which has been focused around young talent and guys whose long-term fate with USMNT remains undecided.
We hope to see the Sandsman put in his usual amazing shift and hopefully see the Yanks through to their third straight Gold Cup final.
