The Hudson River Derby will come early this year.

Last night, New York City defeated New England Revolution in extra time in the US Open Cup Round of 16 behind a 94th minute goal by Santiago Rodríguez. NYCFC will advance to the quarterfinals for just the second time in club history, where they will face New Jersey Red Bulls on June 21 or 22.

It wasn't a surprising result. NYCFC fielded a strong squad that was a combination of Senior Team starters and NYCFC II players, while New England mostly played backup players. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, NYCFC could’t break down the Revolution defense until extra time.

Elsewhere in the USOC, two lower-division clubs earned upset wins over MLS teams. Third-tier Union Omaha defeated Minnesota United at Allianz Field, and second-tier Sacramento Republic FC beat San Jose Earthquakes at home.

In Florida, the game between Orlando City and Inter Miami remained was 1 - 1 after extra time and went to a penalty shootout, which Orlando won.

The Quarterfinals will be played on June 21 and 22. Specific dates will be announced later.
