What surfaced as a rumor last night was confirmed minutes ago: New York City FC have signed Matías Pellegrini from waivers. The 22-year-old Argentine winger will join the club immediately, and will be available to play one week from Sunday when NYCFC face Orlando City in Florida.
As we reported earlier, the right-footed left-winger was under contract with Inter Miami, who loaned him to Estudiantes de la Plata in Argentina. Pelligrini featured 10 times for Estudiantes this season, and made the Starting XI for five league games and five Copa Libertadores matches.
Transfermarkt values Pellegrini at $4.4 million, down from the $8.1 million valuation when Miami signed him. Pellegrini might be unproven, but he is still considered to be a potential star.

New York City Football Club (NYCFC) today announced that the Club has claimed Midfielder Matías Pellegrini off waivers. Pellegrini joins the Club through the remainder of the 2022 season.
The Magdalena, Argentina native arrives in New York having most recently played for Club Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina where he was on loan from Inter Miami CF.
Pellegrini appeared in 20 matches in MLS, MLS Playoffs and in MLS is Back Tournament during the 2020 season for Inter Miami CF before going to Club Estudiantes de la Plata on loan for the 2021/22 season appearing in 42 games across all competitions, including the Copa Libertadores, scoring four goals.
The player has also represented the Argentinian national team at the U-17 and U-20 level on the international stage.
Pellegrini will travel to New York City and join the rest of the squad ahead of the away match against Orlando City SC on August 28.
