It’s safe to say that New York City Football Club are in a very different place today than they were just a week ago. In less than 72-hours, NYCFC pulled out two commanding victories in front of huge Yankee Stadium crowds. Both featured early goals from Alex Callens, and both ended 2-0 in favor of the Boys in Blue.
Wednesday’s Campeones Cup victory came first, and marked the second trophy lifted by the club in their young history. The celebrations were soaked in champaign and smiles, and New York City granted themselves the title of “the champion of champions” in their win over LigaMX club, Atlas.
The New Jersey Red Bulls result followed on Saturday, and completed a season sweep in the Hudson River Derby, which provided the ultimate bragging rights for the fans, and three important points down the final stretch of the MLS regular season.
Both are huge victories, but which was the bigger of the two wins for the club?
To answer this question, I consulted the gaffer himself to see what he thought. After the match, I asked Nick Cushing what felt better to him: The win over the Red Bulls, or the beer shower that ensued in the locker room after the Campeones Cup win.
He chuckled. “I think celebrations after a trophy are what we do the job for,” he said.“Because it’s not about me,” he continued. “It’s about seeing those guys...they put so much in, and you see their energy and their joy afterwards...that’s why we do the job.”
Still, he made sure not to downplay the importance of the victory over their rivals. He went on to say, “But it can’t be underestimated the win today, because the Red Bulls had a week off...I had to rely on the guys to dig really deep, and the performance today was a ten out of ten.”
Just as any good manager would do, Cushing held up both victories, and praised his players at every opportunity for their efforts this past week. Every win counts.
But we want to know what you think: Which result mattered more to you?
