Today is Game Day 31, and New York City FC are in North Carolina to play Charlotte FC on the plastic grass at Bank of America Stadium.

NYCFC will be playing on short rest after a dominating performance over FC Cincinnati at Citi Field that ended in a 1-1 draw. Will the team take heart from the quality of play? Or will they be discouraged by another squandered result?

Charlotte have put together a solid inaugural year with 10 wins after 29 games but are are currently in a slump, with only one win in five matches. That single win? The 1-3 road victory over NYCFC at on August 17.

That single game is the entire head-to-head between these two teams: NYCFC are winless against Charlotte.

Bruce Arena Forecast: Drizzles, 71˚F/22˚C

Player Availability: Alfredo Morales (lower body), and Anton Tinnerholm (lower body) are out with injuries. Thiago Martins is suspended after receiving a red card in Wednesday’s game against FC Cincinnati. Maxime Chanot and Nicolás Acevedo are both suspended because of yellow card accullumlation. Justin Haak is once again available, and Keaton Parks is expected to see some playing time.

• NYCFC are suffering a near-historical bad run of form: The team have won just two of their last ten games, and taken only eight out of a possible 30 points. During last year’s slump, New York City took seven out of a possible 30 points — then finished the season with three wins and a draw. The turning point in 2021 was Match Day 30, when NYCFC drew Atlanta United 1-1, then went on to win Match Day 31 by defeating DC United 6-0 in the Bronx.

• Who will score for NYCFC? New York City have found the back of the net just 10 times in the last 10 games. Six NYCFC players have scored in the last 10 games, with Héber, Maxi Moralez, and Gabriel Pereira notching two goals apiece.

• Will the defense successfully lock out Charlotte this time? Despite a poor run of form in which New York City have allowed 16 goals, the team has also logged three clean sheets.

• When these two teams last played Charlotte were almost in playoff contention, just four points off of seventh place. They are now seven points back and sit in 12th place, and aren’t likely to make it to the postseason.

• Chalotte’s danger man continues to be forward Karol Świderski: The 25-year-old scored in the fourth minute against NYCFC and quieted Red Bull Arena. But he hasn't notched a goal since, and Charlotte have been held scoreless by FC Cincinnati and Toronto FC in their two most recent games

• Charlotte’s midfield engine is Ben Bender, a 21-year-old attacking midfielder who was the number-one pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. Bender, who has three goals and six assists this season, hugs the left.
