Update: New York City FC announced the signing of Hannes Wolf on Tuesday, January 16.

Borussia Mönchengladbach winger Hannes Wolf is said to be on his way to New York City FC in a matter of days.

Reports from Germany indicate that the Austrian international’s contract with the German outfit has been terminated, paving the way for a move to New York City with a reported four-year deal. Wolf, who prominently featured on Gladbach’s left wing, was purchased in the summer of 2021 for €9.5 million from Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig, but failed to impress following his initial loan spell with the club.

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, the deal will be announced shortly.

Details about the trade were emerging yesterday. According to a tweet from German sports publication Funke Sport posted yesterday, the deal is done.

Translated from German, the tweet reads; “Winter transfer: The Austrian Hannes Wolf leaves the @borussia and moves to the USA to New York City FC. His advisor confirmed this to this editorial team. #gladbach”

An article in the Rheinische Post claims that Wolf’s medical exam is scheduled for Sunday, January 14, 2023.

Hannes Wolf: Standout player out of favor at Mönchengladbach

According to German publication WAZ, Wolf’s role with the club has deteriorated drastically following the departure of manager Marco Rose, who sanctioned the signing of the Austrian in 2021.

A standout both domestically and in Europe for RB Salzburg in Austria, Wolf joined Salzburg’s German sister club, RB Leipzig, in 2019, where he made just five appearances. A loan to Gladbach followed in July of 2020, with the Austrian appearing in 41 matches in all competitions for the Lower Rhine outfit. The following summer, Wolf’s loan move was made permanent, with Gladbach sold on the Austrian after he chipped in with four goals and two assists across the league and cup competitions.

Wolf’s honeymoon with the German outfit however would soon come crashing down, as the Austrian found himself out of favor in Gladbach from the start of the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign. The Austrian was then loaned to EFL Championship side Swansea City in January of 2022 but failed to impress for the Welsh side. Upon the conclusion of his loan spell, Wolf returned to Gladbach as a rotation option off the bench, before finding himself out of the club’s plans entirely this season under new manager Gerardo Seoane.

With rumors of Talles Magno looking for a transfer out of New York City picking up steam, a move for the young left-winger on a free transfer makes sense for both parties.
