New York City FC were two minutes away from their first opening-day win since 2018. NYCFC were up by one goal for much of the second-half, but an Inter Miami reduced to 10 players scored nine minutes in stoppage time to steal a draw at home.

Head Coach Pascal Jansen fielded a patched-together lineup that couldn't hold onto the win. Strahinja Tanasijević started in place of the injured Thiago Martins, Maxi Moralez put in 78 minutes as the No 10, and 17-year-old Jonny Shore and MLS SuperDraft pick Nico Cavallo made their Major League Soccer debuts.

Inter Miami 2-2 New York City FC: 4 Thoughts
NYCFC didn’t win their season-opening match for the seventh straight year, but they got a great performance from Alonso Martínez and a promising first glimpse of how Pascal Jansen will run his ship.

Mitja Ilenič scored New York City's first goal of the season off a beautifully worked Maxi Moralez set piece following the Miami red card. Then Alonso Martínez pounced on a Jordi Alba giveaway to score his first goal of the 2025 campaign.

But Miami were the more dangerous team despite being short-handed, and a complete unmarked Telco Segovia scored the tying goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time.
