Inter Miami end New York City's fairytale run, advance to 2025 MLS Cup Final

New York City FC put up a fight, but Lionel Messi's Inter Miami settled into the game and end the night with a 5-1 win and a date to host the 2025 MLS Cup Final.

New York City FC brought the game to Inter Miami CF, but they fell 5-1 to the hosts in the Eastern Conference Final. Miami will now play for the 2025 MLS Cup one week from today.

Miami struck first, with Tadeo Allende scoring in the 14th minute. Allende followed up with another goal just nine minutes later. New York City got on the scoresheet in the 37th minute, when Justin Haak headed in a scintillating header off a set piece. NYCFC looked to be the better team at the start of the second half, but Miami sealed the win with a goal from Mateo Silvetti in the 67th minute courtesy of a Lionel Messi assist.

The hosts then piled on two late goals, one from Telasco Segovia, and yet another from Allende, to make it 5-1.

New York City's offseason will officially begin tomorrow. The team outperformed expectations all year long — many pundits picked NYCFC to miss the playoffs before the start of the season, but they not only made it to the postseason, they dispatched Supporters' Shield-winning Philadelphia Union on Sunday with a 1-0 upset win. But now preparations for the 2026 season will start despite New York City being without a sporting director since the departure of David Lee for Sporting Kansas City in September.
