Earlier today, New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese was named to the United States men's national team 2025 Gold Cup roster by head coach Mauricio Pochettino. He is one of three goalkeepers to make the 26-player squad, joining Chris Brady of Chicago Fire and Matt Turner of Crystal Palace.

Freese is the only goalkeeper to make the cut out of the four named to the 27-player June training camp roster back in May. The other goalkeepers originally named to that squad – Drake Callender of Inter Miami, Patrick Schulte of Columbus Crew, and Zack Steffen of Colorado Rapids – are all currently recovering from injuries.

Brady, who wasn't on the original June camp roster, is an unexpected choice. This is the first senior men's call-up for the 21-year-old, who has 13 caps for US youth teams. New York City scored three goals against Brady on May 25, when a short-handed Chicago lost 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

2025 Midterm Report Card: Matt Freese
New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese starts off our 2025 Midterm Report Cards. Not to give anything away, but the Iceman is a star student.

Both Freese and Brady have zero caps for the senior USMNT. Freese earned his first call-up to the USMNT for the January training camp, but he didn't appear in the friendlies against Venezuela on January 18 or Costa Rica on January 22. Freese wasn't named to the 23-player roster for the 2025 Concacaf Nations League tournament played in March, which saw the USMNT lose to Canada in the third-place final and finish fourth.

The USMNT are playing two friendlies in the next few days during the international break that officially ends on Tuesday, June 10. First, they will face Türkiye on Saturday, June 7 at 3:30 pm ET at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Then they will face Switzerland on Tuesday, June 10 at 8:00 pm ET at GEODIS Park in Nashville, TN.

Matt Freese: NYCFC star goalkeeper snubbed by MLS and USMNT
The Iceman remains criminally underrated despite being New York City FC’s best player all season long and in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
