New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese will get another chance to impress United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino after getting called up to the national team for two upcoming friendlies that will be held during the September international break.
Freese will be one of three in the goalkeeper pool, joining Roman Celentano of Cincinnati FC and Jonathan Klinsmann of Cesena FC in Italy's Serie B. Neither Celentano nor Klinsmann has been capped by the team. Freese has seven caps with the team, becoming the first-choice goalkeeper during the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup this past summer. He made a case to become the team's presumptive No 1 after making three saves in a penalty shootout against Costa Rica to send the team into the semifinals.

Matt Turner, the former first-choice goalkeeper for the men's team, was not called up despite returning to New England Revolution in the summer transfer window and making three league starts in recent weeks.

It will be a short commute for Freese. Players will report to camp in New Jersey on August 31, then will play a friendly against South Korea at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, NJ, on September 6. That will be followed by a friendly against Japan at Lower.com Field in Columbus, OH, on September 9.
This will be the first time that the USMNT have played together since losing to Mexico in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup Final on July 6. That team was missing key European-based players such as Christian Pulisic (AC Milan) and Tim Weah (Olympique de Marseille), and Josh Sargent.
This time, Pochettino has picked what looks to be more like a first-choice squad. Pulisic and Weah will be there, along with Sergiño Dest (PSV Eindhoven) and Josh Sargent (Norwich City). You'll find the full roster below.
