New York City FC ran roughshod over Orlando City SC and won their home opener handily, walking out of Yankee Stadium with a 5-0 win to make it a three-match unbeaten run to start the 2026 season.
The floodgates opened once Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau got sent off with a straight red card for handling the ball outside his penalty area in the 16th minute.
New York City scored thrice before halftime and never looked back, with Agustín Ojeda, Nico Fernández Mercau, and Maxi Moralez giving them an all-Argentine advantage before the break. Keaton Parks bagged two goals early in the second half and it was all smiles for New York City as they played their first match at home since November 1, 2025.
Here are 4 thoughts emerging from the first home match of the season which ended up being one of the biggest wins in the club's history.
1. Orlando lends a helping hand
Orlando started this match about as badly as you possibly could. Their 19-year-old left-back Tahir Reid-Brown, making only his second career MLS start, got beaten for pace by Agustín Ojeda and absolutely cleared out the speedy NYCFC winger, earning a well-deserved yellow card in just the seventh minute. It was a reckless challenge from the teenaged defender that, in real time and to the naked eye, looked like it could have risen to the level of dangerous play and warranted a red. Reid-Brown ended up being removed for a substitute at halftime.
Not to worry, though, as Orlando earned their red card nine minutes later. Maxime Crepeau strayed beyond the 18-yard box with the ball still in his grasp and referee Guido Gonzales, Jr. did not hesitate to send the Canadian international off, with no trip to the VAR monitor even necessary to confirm the on-field decision.
This was a wounded Orlando side coming in, with back-to-back losses at home to open their season, the second loss a depressing Florida Derby collapse after leading Inter Miami CF 2-0 in the early going. They needed a fast start and they got the opposite.
It's not like New York City needs a lot of extra help, given they'd started the season unbeaten and entered this game full of confidence, knowing they've consistently picked up wins and points at home and especially in their home openers.
Orlando needed to produce the best performance of their season to get something out of this game, but instead, they imploded and were down a player and down by three goals at halftime. They look like a hot mess and like they're on the exact opposite trajectory of New York City FC, their 2015 expansion-season rivals.
2. Ruthless with the sword
New York City did not let the foot off the proverbial gas after halftime, not in the least. Despite a three-goal lead and the player advantage, the home team came out determined to make this as lopsided a result as they could.
Perhaps there was an element of "giving up" from Orlando, but New York City still had to break them down and get more goals, which they got from an unlikely source early in the second half: Keaton Parks.
The returning-to-health midfielder made his second straight start and bagged a brace, scoring first in the 49th minute by redirecting home a nice cross from Matchday 2 hero Tayvon Gray, then again in the 54th minute by perfectly placing a left-footed strike inside Orlando's far post.
The NYCFC players looked more motivated and switched-on than Orlando all match, and that only intensified after halftime. The fact that NYCFC never let up and even could throw on a player like Talles Magno while up big, a Designated Player and highly-thought-of attacker, speaks to how unforgiving this version of New York City can be against a vulnerable, lesser-than opponent like Orlando is at this moment.
The 5-0 margin of victory matches the 5-0 win over FC Cincinnati that Ronny Deila's team earned in the 2021 home opener, and it was the first time NYCFC scored five times since they beat the Red Bulls 5-1 on the road late in the 2024 season.
3. Masterful Maxi Moralez
Maxi Moralez played in his eighth home opener for New York City FC and was the most influential player on the Yankee Soccer Stadium pitch, like he's been so many times before across his storied NYCFC career.
He entered the 2026 opener having scored one goal and collected three assists in his previous seven home-opener appearances and his fingerprints were all over this win in the end. Moralez assisted Agustín Ojeda's opener, a milestone in that it gave Maxi 100 career assists with NYCFC.
Moralez wasn't done there, though, as he picked up another assist on Nico Fernández Mercau's header goal, then converted from the penalty spot when Nico drew a penalty kick, the second time Fernández Mercau has done that already this season.
So the ageless Moralez had another signature performance at Yankee Stadium, and it's still unclear when or if he'll ever really slow down and start being an attacking sparkplug at the center of everything good that happens for New York City's attack.
The 39-year-old midfielder got a break in the second half, removed in the 62nd minute, which could prove to be valuable rest given that it looks like 2026 will be another season that features lots of Maxi Moralez in the middle for NYCFC.
4. Sky Scraper takes flight
This home opener didn’t have the symbolic milestone of last year’s 10th-anniversary celebration, but it did have a milestone of its own: The MLS debut of Sky Scraper, New York City FC's new pigeon mascot.
Sky took the field at Yankee Stadium for the first time in dramatic fashion, walking through pyrotechnics and sprinting cross-pitch while hoisting a New York City FC flag during their sprint.
The pigeon mascot is a hit, cheered loudly by the fans in Yankee Stadium while making their first appearance. The vibes turned immaculate for NYCFC as soon as Sky stepped onto that field, so it doesn't feel like a stretch to say that the "new mascot bump" is as real and as beneficial as the "new manager bump" can be for struggling teams in Europe.
Orlando stood no chance as soon as Sky got out there. Nothing strikes fear into the hearts of people from Florida like the unchecked movements of a New York City pigeon.
