New York City crushes 10-man Orlando for first home win of 2026

A Keaton Parks brace and a Maxi Moralez masterclass paced New York City FC to a 5-0 victory at Yankee Stadium, their ninth win from 12 all-time home openers.

History was on New York City FC's side Saturday afternoon, as the Pigeons continued their trend of dominance in home openers with a 5-0 thrashing of Orlando City SC at Yankee Stadium.

It was a complete performance from New York City, who looked the better team on both sides of the ball while putting forth their best attacking display of the early season.

Goals from Agustín Ojeda and Nico Fernández Mercau got the stadium jumping after Orlando went down to 10 men just 18 minutes in. Maxi Moralez converted a spot kick just before halftime, followed by a brace from the newly fit Keaton Parks early in the second half to truly put the game to bed.

New York City hadn't put five past a side without conceding since thrashing Toronto 5-0 during the 2023 Leagues Cup. This was the first utterly dominant performance from the Pigeons under Pascal Jansen, as the squad continues to take steps forward.

Maxi magic

It is hard to believe that Maxi Moralez entered his age-39 season this February, after contributing 12 goals and assists in 41 starts in 2025 – not appearances, starts. The club's greatest ever player started every single MLS game for New York City last season at 38-years-old. A remarkable achievement for the Argentine, who continues to age like a fine wine season after season.

What needs to be talked about today is Maxi's ability to turn back the clock on any given Saturday, back to his prime in the late 2010's and early 2020's. A goal and two assists before halftime Saturday afternoon, albeit against 10 men. Maxime Crépeau was sent off after 18 minutes for foolishly bobbling the ball outside the penalty area. Still, three goal contributions in 31 minutes at 39-years-old is an outrageous feat, and is a testament to how good the 5'3 Argentine remains.

Following Crépeau's red card, New York City failed to convert directly from the subsequent free kick, but ultimately found the back of the net thanks to a cool finish from Ojeda a couple set pieces later. Maxi did well to control the loose ball and scoop his cross into the air over the Orlando City defenders, before Ojeda teed up a sweet volley, slamming it into the ground and bouncing past the just-subbed-on Javier Otero to make it 1-0.

Over the 20 minutes that followed, the Pigeons dominated, pinning Orlando deep in their own half, and even springing excellent counters through quality long balls over the top when Orlando happened to find themselves on the offensive. The visitors simply couldn't catch a break, with the dam breaking in the 42nd minute when Nico made it 2-0.

All of the talk so far this season has been the lack of a true No 9 up top for New York City amidst the absence of Alonso Martinez. Pascal Jansen has continuously pushed that the squad will be competitive no matter what, and Nico Fernández Mercau is a big reason why. Saturday he operated mostly through the middle, and had his most striker-like game of the season so far, capped off with a true striker's header to double the lead before halftime, off another Maxi cross.

Postgame, when asked about the match and how the squad performed in front of goal without a true No 9, Jansen chuckled and reiterated that he and his staff are "not making a big issue of the No 9 that's not available for us," going on to say that Alonso Martinez is "working really hard" to get back to full fitness, and that any new attacker brought in to this team will have to have "special impact qualities that we might need" or he's content with the squad at his current disposal.

To cap off his stellar first half, Maxi stepped up to take New York City's penalty in the eight minute of first-half stoppage time, after Nico Fernandez was brought down in the box by Orlando's Luis Otavio. The diminutive No 10 jogged up with confidence and caressed his effort into the bottom-left corner, sending the crowd into ecstasy before halftime.

The last time the Pigeons put on a show like this in a home opener, they put five past FC Cincinnati in 2021, setting all sorts of records along the way. Moralez was instrumental in that demolition, but he orchestrated this latest act all on his own, or at least until the second half.

Keaton steals show in Bronx return

To say Keaton Parks stole the show in the second half holds up for a variety of reasons. Maxi was cruising his way to the Player of the Match award before Parks had his say and iced the game with a brace of his own.

With the game firmly in hand, Jansen pushed Parks further forward into a more advanced, attacking-midfielder role where, at times, he was essentially a second striker. This proved more than effective with the American grabbing two goals in five minutes shortly after halftime, while making just his second start since last May.

The first Parks goal came in the 49th minute, with Keaton poking home a low cross from Tayvon Gray to make it 4-0 New York City. It was an excellent poacher's finish, and showed how threatening Parks can be as another physical presence crashing the box. But his second strike was truly that of a forward.

As the Pigeons applied more pressure forward, Orlando struggled to clear a cross into the box, driving their attempted clearance low and right into the feet of Parks at the edge of the 18-yard box. He took one moment to set himself before firing past Otero into the bottom right corner to make it 5-0. It was the first-career brace for Parks, and his first game with multiple goal contributions since his two assists in the 2-2 draw at Nashville last season.

To say that Parks will be an X-factor for New York City this season is an understatement of enormous proportions. Pascal Jansen tried so many options to fill the void left when Parks went down injured in 2025, and today was a reminder why. Stalwart in defense and a genuine threat in attack, coupled with his massive frame, Parks will be a top midfielder in Major League Soccer this season, so long as he remains on the field. But so far so good.

Are the Pigeons for real?

The talk around New York City FC all preseason was fairly straightforward: How will the Pigeons react to the loss of Alonso Martínez? Most MLS pundits weren't high on Jansen's men going into Opening Day, with some having the Pigeons finishing as low as 13th in the Eastern Conference. With seven points after just three games, it seems as though the Pigeons are locked in on running it back in 2026.

The run to the 2025 Eastern Conference Final was a microcosm of how this team has evolved since Pascal Jansen took over. They're resilient, pragmatic, and can turn up the heat at the drop of a dime. New York City has always dominated proceedings at home, as was the case on Saturday. This is a New York City side that many consider undermanned and under-gunned, yet they haven't played like it to start the year.

Andrés Perea and Alonso Martínez are still expected to miss months, with the latter sidelined until well after the World Cup. Forward Malachi Jones had an injury setback during preseason, and his timetable for a return is still up in the air. Not to mention Justin Haak, the club's best defender last season, walking out the door in free agency to LA Galaxy.

This team is still lacking reinforcements, but continues to make early strides towards a second MLS Cup. The Pigeons are unbeaten through three MLS games for the first time since 2019. That year, the Boys in Blue earned three draws to open the season before going on to finish in 1st Place in the Eastern Conference.

Will 2026 mirror that of 2019? It's certainly possible, and Jansen clearly has the squad inspired enough to match. The defense remains rock solid. Tayvon Gray was back to adding goal contributions, his assist to Parks making it a second goal involvement for him in two games, while Kai Trewin and Thiago Martins convincingly held the line in central-defense. Matt Freese even picked his 20th league clean sheet for New York City, though he only needed to make one save.

The attack will continue to raise questions, but performances like we saw on Saturday will go a long way towards silencing the critics and the doubters. The World Cup break will certainly impact momentum, but if New York City continues at this pace, the top of the Eastern Conference will be a fun scene to watch unfold come October.
